About the event

Peter Mesier had a store within the Mesier Homestead in 1777, as did many households during Colonial times.  Mesier's store was even the site of the Wappinger Tea Party revolt. What were these Colonial era stores like, and what products did they carry?   Discover more about "Revolutionary Shopping: Buying, Selling, and Everyday Life in Dutchess on the Eve of the American Revolution" in a special presentation by County Historian by William P. Tatum III, Ph.D.

Long before Amazon and other online shopping venues, Dutchess County residents went to physical stores for *all* of their retail needs. Join Dutchess County Historian Will Tatum for a deep dive into the origins of the shopping experience in the county. Learn what colonial era stores stocked and sold, the forms of payment they accepted, and the extensive areas they served. Discover how our corner of the Hudson Valley was tied into a global marketplace of goods long before the internet age.

This event is part of our Speaker Series programming. The public is invited to attend. WHS member admission is free, non-member suggested donation of $5.00. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited and is on a first come/first serve basis.  Please RSVP to help us plan attendance and to be added to our mailing list. (please note, an RSVP does not save you a seat).
